"Speaking Of and To The Sacred.
It is based on the radical teaching of Jesus to call God "papa." I have also included in the text the poem I read, "God's Letters."

The talk this week will make more sense if you do look at the presentation slides. Also, the audio version is somewhat different from the text from which I spoke.
In summary this is what the talk was about:
Our growing in freedom and love is blocked by several things and our psychological and spiritual work
involves being ever attentive toward these matters. They are -
the distracting, though useful, technology all about us;
our understanding of "Sacred Mystery" is wrong;
our understanding of ourselves is inadequate;
our understanding of "prayer" is neither wise nor useful.
The talk is an elaboration on these matters and a suggestion about how to correct them.

What is the difference between safety and security? And, which of the two is the most important to you?
Further, why are we so fascinated with violence and murder? One reason is that we want to be safe. Another reason is that murder and murderers have made up a form of drama and entertainment for humans since the beginning of recorded history.
In the talk I offered this week in Ordinary Life I amplify on these matters, talk about the movie Bernie and one of Jesus' most mysterious parables. The parable is called by scholars "The Assassin" and is quite unlike most anything else we have Jesus saying.

Many people have become cynical and/or disenchanted with both religion and politics. It is easy to see why as reason has been displaced by thoughtless ideology in both. People believe weird things because they either accept a falsehood or reject a truth.
Jesus told a story that we didn't really know was his until the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is a story without a moral. It simply underscores the social and economic issues of his time - and ours. It is easy for us to accept falsehoods and/or reject truth about our own social and economic realities. This talk is about such and an encouragement not to become cynical or disenchanted but, rather, to be skeptical and re-enchanted.
