Dear Folks -
Stars are available to us but we have to go into the dark to see them.
If we are unwilling to face the dark sides of ourselves and of the various worlds in which we live, we will never be able to see life "as it is."
This talk is about the value of knowing and befriending what Jungian psychologists call "the Shadow." To the degree we are unwilling to face the shadow, it owns us and directs our lives.
That is a brief summary of the talk I gave in Ordinary Life this week.

Dear Folks -
As is sometimes the case, the recorded version of the talk I gave in Ordinary Life this week deviates from the text I used to speak from. For one thing, there were a lot of cartoons shown. These can be found on the web site.
A goal I had for this talk was to be provocative about this question: what is the character of your God?
Everybody has an answer to that question. How we answer it is, in my opinion, crucially important for who we understand ourselves to be and what our purpose on this planet it. That is, if one takes a religious/spiritual approach to the living of life. The talk is based on what is considered by many scholars to be the most radical of all the teachings of Jesus.

Dear Folks -
I begin this talk with information about the symbolism of water and fish in doing "soul work."
There are two fears we bring to doing spiritual work. First, that nothing will happen. Second, that something will.
We are called to love the enemy which means not using people as hooks for our personal projections.
In thinking that we in the Western world are exceptional and special we have given birth to people who feel that they are entitled and who have little capacity for assuming personality responsibility for themselves or the world in which they live.

Dear Folks -
The longer I have done work in the arenas of both psychology and theology, the more convinced I have been of the power of the unconscious. It is almost as if we consciously choose not to know certain things and this "not knowing" causes disastrous consequences for us both personally and corporately.
This "life talk" is about the importance of "choosing to know."
