Summary of Ordinary Life for August 14, 2022

Dear Ones -

This week in Ordinary Life Holly Hudley and I co-taught and the content of our teaching was a reflection on one of the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. Each of these stories is so rich in imagery and metaphor. In this particular one we lift up one phrase. It is where Jesus says to Mary, “Don’t cling to me.”

Every living religious tradition teaches some form about the importance of “letting go.” We live in a culture that stresses achieving, accomplishing, doing, having, etc. There is a profound paradox in doing spiritual work. We must strive. However, we must also never think that striving is the key. As Meister Eckhart wrote, “We don’t achieve by attaining because nothing is missing. We experience truth by letting go over and over and over again.” Must must learn to “take it easy.”

That’s a brief summary of the talk.
