Dear Folks -
Please permit me to apologize for the tardy publication of this Ordinary Life summary. The fault lies with this author and not Bill Kerley.
This last Sunday we were privileged to have Bethany Williams join us to speak about
"Human Trafficking - In the World and in Houston"
In her talk, Bethany managed to condense a much more comprehensive overview and description of human trafficking into a 30 minute presentation, followed by a question and answer session.
Bethany helped us understand what constitutes trafficking and explained the Palermo Protocol's definition of of Acts, Means, and Purpose. For example, Acts of trafficking include transporting, harboring, or recruiting trafficking victims, while the Means includes coercion, threat/use of force, fraud, deception or other devices.
Bethany went on to explain the factors that place individuals at risk of being trafficked, including a history of sexual abuse, physical abuse, drug abuse, poverty, and runaways, a partial list of factors.
Bethany concluded her talk with a description of actions that are being taken right now by groups and churches in our communities including the photographing of hotel rooms so that rooms where trafficking victims are being exploited can be identified, visiting at risk communities with information, and handing out/posting phone numbers that can be called for help by those being abused.
Bethany spoke without notes; hence there is no text of her talk available. However, she essentially followed modules of a training program created by herself and classmate Dalaina May. The text of the modules can be found in the Ordinary Life Podcast.
