Dear Folks -

In going through the Gospel of Thomas in order to learn more about it and its value for our own spiritual work, the passage I encountered for this week’s talk led me to remember an event from many years ago. Over fifty years ago. I was serving a church in Northeast rural Texas. At the grave side service during a funeral on a bitterly cold winter day, my clothes caught on fire. I begin this talk by telling that story.

The illusion that we do or can hang on to anything is the major thing that keeps us stuck on our spiritual journey. Much like the two-year old child who learn to hang on to things and scream, “Mine! Mine!” I also offer in this talk what I hope is a valuable distinction between “morality” and “spirituality.” I called the talk -
