Dear Folks -

I called the talk I offered in Ordinary Life this week

“Developing Faith In a Time of Crisis"

The crisis we are in is both religious and political. I began with the story of Carlton Pearson, a Pentecostal preacher, who was declared a heretic by his denomination because he began preaching a “gospel of inclusion.” You can hear his story on the podcast “This American Life.” The episode is titled “Heretic.” Or, you can see his story portrayed in the movie “Come Sunday.” (I streamed this from Netflix.)

Fundamentalist religion has gotten involved in American politics in a disturbing and divisive manner. The core teaching of Jesus was and is about something very different than the Fundamentalists are currently preaching. This is dangerous for our country and for people seeking an understanding of authentic faith. A group of respected religious leaders has recently released a statement of faith titled “Reclaiming Jesus: A Statement of Faith in a Time of Crisis.” I conclude the talk quoting part of it and encourage you to read it in it’s entirety. There is a link to it below.

That is a very brief summary or the talk I offered in Ordinary Life this week.
