Dear Folks -
I called the talk I offered in Ordinary Life -
Being and Staying Woke in a Stuporous World
It is so easy in our culture to get distracted from or go to sleep about what really matters. In seeking what it might mean to live out the values of Jesus in our culture, it is helpful to remember that the powerful wisdom of Jesus comes out of the actual social and political situations he faced, that he grew up in and with. Jesus did not teach acquiescence to evil but, rather, he offers us an example about a way to retaliate to evil that shows evil for what it is. The best way to honor Jesus is not to know about him or believe in him but to be what he was about. The two most easily overlooked or de-emphasized aspects of Jesus are his mystical nature and his political stance. What is required from us is radical honesty, fearless openness and a willingness to give up control and the need to be right. The way Jesus did his work was to sneak powerful stories into people’s consciousness before they knew what had hit them.
That is a very brief summary of the talk I offered this week in Ordinary Life. As is often the case, I think the audio version is better than the text from which I spoke.
You can read or download the text from which I spoke, view the presentation slides, listen to the audio of the talk and/or watch the video of the talk using the links below.
If you are reading this, I want you to know how grateful I am for and to you.
Be well and much love,
Bill Kerley
