Dear Folks -
For those of you in the Houston area -
I am going to continue to encourage you to join the study/discussion group that meets tonight, Tuesday, February 4. We are using the Reclaiming Jesus declaration and are being led by St. Paul’s member Diane Schenke. You can read the document by clicking here.
If it is at all possible for you to do so, I highly recommend attending this. I am attending this and would like to see you do so also. This document is one of the things guiding me in my effort to create a “new story” or an “evolving faith for an evolving people."
I called the talk I gave this week in Ordinary Life -
“The Truth Is . . ."
This talk is about truth, facts, assessments, opinions and assertions that are treated as facts. We live in a culture where the importance of truth telling is diminishing. What is “the truth”? Truth depends on perspective and position. Truth changes as knowledge and information change. For example, at one time in history "the truth" was that the earth was the center of the universe. As knowledge grew that truth got replaced with something that was truer. With the introduction of "alternate facts” we have gotten as a country into an emotional and relational regression where what is clearly unacceptable for the common good has been made more acceptable. I recall Plato’s line: “What is honored in a country will be cultivated there.” We are in danger of becoming the frog in a pot of water where the heat is being gradually increased. I end with the telling of my visit to “The Truth Shop."
That is a brief summary of the talk offered in Ordinary Life. The audio version contains all the asides and ad libs. The presentation slides contain the paintings I refer to.
You can read or download the text from which I spoke, view the presentation slides, and listen to the audio of the talk using the links below.
If you are reading this, I want you to know how grateful I am for and to you.
Be well and much love,
Bill Kerley
