Dear Folks -

This week in Ordinary Life we began a new mini-series. We are calling it:

Interbeing: How Jesus and Buddha Can Guide Us Through the Pandemic

I began by talking about the many parallels between Jesus and Buddha both as people and in their teachings. One of the major similarities is that what each of them taught is referred to as “the way.” This “way” consists of a new way of seeing that leads to a transformation that produces people committed to live compassionate lives. There is a major difference between them in that Jesus had a passion for social and political justice that isn’t found in the teachings of Buddha. Holly talks about how Thich Nhat Hanh introduced into Buddhist thought and practice the notion of “engaged Buddhism.” The word he used for this is “interbeing.” Our commitment is to hold these teachings up in such a way that they cannot be ignored.

Of course, there was no way that we could not address the lamentable events going on in our country born out of systemic and institutional racism. We had some things to share, especially a powerful photograph, “The Age of Innocence,” that you can only experience by hearing the audio of the talk and seeing the presentation slides.

You can find the text, presentation slides and audio version of the talk using the links below.

Also, be aware that we have instituted a weekly podcast. It is called “In Between.” The first edition is also on the Ordinary Life website.
