Dear Ones -
I called the teaching I offered in Ordinary Life this week -
Daring to Touch the Hem of Healing
The talk begins with my asking people to imagine they are cutting into a lemon. In part, and you’ll have to see the video to understand, this was to demonstrate how we create reality by how we communicate. Paul Watzlavick wrote one of the most influential books in the field of psychology in his “The Pragmatics of Human Communication.” He also wrote, “How Real is Real.” Both are important contributions to understanding how human communication functions. The fact is that we, and the communities we are a part of, thrive in the soil of reality and shrivel when we wander away from truthful living. I share a piece of active imagination I created after hearing James Finley teach about “the path of descent.” Thomas Merton said “there is no greater disaster in the spiritual life than to be immersed in unreality.” The story in the Jesus narrative of the woman who reached out for healing by touching the clothes of Jesus is a metaphor for our soul’s longing for healing.
That’s a brief summary of this week’s time in Ordinary Life.
