WEEKLY PODCAST | In Between.132

Well, as Bill once joked, when we both have our doctorates, we will be a “paradocs.” This was during the time that we were talking about paradox as not only a way but the way of reality. So here we are, officially a “paradocs.” Thank you for all the love and support last Sunday. It is a tough thing for a woman, for this woman, to feel openly proud and receptive to other peoples’ pride in her accomplishments. So I very humbly say “thank you.”

This is not all we talk about in the podcast. As usual, we go toward inclusion and building a better world. This is a dream, a vision, a ladder in the sky shared by many in Ordinary Life. It can only ever be done in a community. So let us persist in imagining AND CREATING a world we would love our great-great-grandchildren to inherit.

SUNDAY TALK | What's On Your Mind? | Dr. Kerley & Roddy Young

ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life

Summary of Ordinary Life for June 11, 2023

Dear Ones -

There is no written text for the content of this week’s Ordinary Life. I asked my dear friend, Roddy Young, if he would dialogue with me about whatever was on people’s minds. Though I thought we would wade into deep theological water, we didn’t. Rather, it was a conversation between two dear friends getting to know one another better. You’ll have to listen or or watch the audio/video when it is posted.

I took the opportunity to have this format because I had the privilege of preaching the sermon at both services at St. Paul’s. If you want to listen to or watch that service, click here.

WEEKLY PODCAST | In Between.131

Today I get a gentle preview of what I will undergo Friday when I defend my dissertation. Bill asked me several questions about my work, and I thought, “Oh, how much fun this would be if it were more like a conversation than a presentation! Or if someone told me bad jokes halfway through!”

This podcast is “practice” and preview for my work entitled “Ladders in the Sky,” a title inspired by my oldest son. Basically, I want to imagine a world in which we can get free of division and dualism and come together not because we are the same but because we honor difference. Thanks for listening and for being with me/us on this journey!

SUNDAY LECTURE | A Journey of Radical Amazement

ORDINARY LIFE - Thoughts and Ideas to Help You Live a Happier Life

Summary of Ordinary Life for May 21, 2023

Dear Ones -

Next week in Ordinary Life I want to respond to questions/comments you might have about recent Ordinary Life presentations or anything else that is on your mind. You can do that, if you wish, by clicking here. Roddy Young is going to dialogue with me next week. Should be loads of “the unexpected.” Also, I’ll be preaching at both services next Sunday at St. Paul’s.

This week we called the time -

A Journey of Radical Amazement

As far as I can see into the future, I will focus my teaching on three things: an evolving understand and involvement with “God,” with “the Self,” while walking a path illuminated by the life and teachings of Jesus. Along the way we may hit speed bumps or take detours.

This is what happened to me this week when someone sent me information about the death of Timothy Keller asking if I had ever heard of this remarkable person. I had not but endeavored to find out. I discovered that Keller was a gracious, charming, highly educated person who had started and grown a church in Manhattan that had a weekly attendance of over six thousand. He also wrote a score of books. I bought a couple of them and began reading. Keller is a very conservative (women in his church cannot serve in positions of leadership) and has a huge following. My ongoing concern about the growth of “Christian Nationalism” and how Keller and his ilk fuel this movement led me to thinking about “black holes.”

Holly Hudley, who gets her Ph.D. this Friday, knows so much more about this than I do so I asked her to bring her insights to bear and she did - in her usual wonderful way. The phrase “radical amazement” comes from Abraham Heschel. We are called by Jesus to a journey where we are not in control.
