Dear Ones -
Mature spirituality moves us beyond narcissism. This is an important principle to keep in mind when seeking to understand the meaning of “resurrection.” Since one of the primary reasons the Gospel of John was written was to “explain” resurrection, this is important. Because of language the opportunities for misunderstandings about this are numerous. Further, most people’s understanding of resurrection comes from 14th century paintings and early stained glass depictions. In the first century the word “resurrection” did not have any of the meanings we give to it. We have been taught what to look for and not how to see. One example is the rhyme of Humpty Dumpty. There is nothing in it about an egg. It is more helpful to think of “resurrection” than “the resurrection.” Resurrection is an invitation into a new, expanded understanding of life and living; not a “doctrine” to believe in.
