As we are led into a new theme, “Making the Sacred Journey Sacred,” there are several questions that arise:
1) What do we mean by sacred?
2) How do we relate to prayer?
3) What do our answers imply about worship?
As unique, meaning-making creatures, our answers are as varied as we are. The “religious experience” is simultaneously highly personal and wildly universal. It would be interesting for each of us to think through these questions, to be aware of the myths that have informed our answers. It would also be interesting to note how our answers have changed.
As we deconstruct what we have learned and believed, it is essential (and a work of radical imagination!) to reconstruct something new. I hope these conversations give you something to think about in addition to the many many book recommendations made over time!
The most recent book mentioned is Frederick Beuchner’s The Sacred Journey, part memoir, part spiritual excavation.
Thanks for listening and see you soon!
