Hearing and Responding to Sophia's Invitation

Dear Folks -

Holly Hudley and I are talking about how the most critical need in navigating the space between the “no-longer” and the “not-yet” are people of mature or adult faith. One of the major marks of such a faith is wisdom. When Jesus issued the invitation “come unto me all you who are weary,” he was quoting from wisdom literature. The person speaking is wisdom personified as the female archetype “Sophia.” Holly gave us a lot of insight into the origin and nature of Sophia. We can’t, of course, step into wisdom if we are still held captive by the shadow archetype of patriarchy. To that end I bring forth one of my favorite lines from R.D. Lang about how the range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. This line, which I first heard in the early eighties, has significantly shaped my teaching over the years.

That is a very brief summary of what Holly and I talked about in Ordinary Life this week.

As is usually the case, the audio version is better than the text. I include the text for those who want the quotes. Also, the presentation slides are essential to see how Holly illustrates what she has to say.

I am so grateful to our being able to continue to meet for Ordinary Life even if it is in a virtual setting. I miss seeing you face-to-face.

Holly Hudley and I will continue to co-teach and we will shape our conversations to fit and needs and concerns of our present context.
