Dear Ones -

One of the many reasons I wanted to do a “deep dive” into the Gospel of John is because it is an example of theological reflection in action. In it we see a new level of faith development growing out of a time of doubt and difficulty - much like the times in which we live. If our faith is to grow we need to be aware of the context in which it was first formed. We won’t gain the truth that John is trying to convey if we confuse story-telling and parable with literal events. The first “sign” in John is the familiar story of “turning water into wine.” One of the main things this story conveys, believe it or not, is the importance of the feminine. Since we live in a sea of toxic masculinity, this one of the issues we must recognize and address. Holly talks about this. I give a summary of Brian McLaren’s “faith development” model.
