Summary of Ordinary Life for February 13, 2022

Dear Ones -

This week I offered my reflection on the story in John where Jesus walks on water. I began by recalling the significant role Harry Emerson Fosdick has had in my life and his part in the beginning of the “modernist” - Fundamentalist controversy. Both “progressives” and “conservatives” have misread the “miracle stories” by not seeing them as parables. This story is about Jesus being a new doorway into the meaning and understanding of God. We have to leave behind what we had and embrace something entirely new. We have to be open both to the “tremendous mystery” and the “fascinating mystery” at the same time.

As regards to “going forward” I suggest there are four things to keep in mind:
Spiritual practice is a willing awareness that when we undertake it all hell will break loose.
We can and do “Peter out” when we take our eyes off of fearless living.
We are all in the same boat together.
And,
Everything is going to be okay.

That’s a brief summary of the time in Ordinary Life this week.
