Dear Ones -
The talk offered in Ordinary Life this week had this title -
Shall We Break Bread Together
It is based on a story that was very important to the early Jesus community - we know it as “the feeding of the five thousand.” It is a sad but true fact that for almost fifty years the best and most up-to-date scholarship about Jesus and the documents that contain teachings of his and teachings about him has not been taught in the education curriculum of most Christian churches. Consequently, a vacuum in religious literacy has created space for “fundamentalism” to step in. This story was never intended to be taken literally. One brief way to understand it is that we are hungry for that which truly nourishes. The most fundamental harm we can cause ourselves is to remain ignorant by not having the courage and respect to deal with “the truth.” Carl Jung once wrote that as long as the soul is empty a person is a prey to evil either as a victim or as a perpetrator. This story is about the importance of being fed by that which truly nourishes.
That’s a brief summary of the time in Ordinary Life this week.
