Dear Ones -
Whenever I offer any reinterpretation of “Christian theology” in light of evolutionary cosmology I get two questions: “What about prayer? If there is no “god” out there, to whom do we pray? And, why?” The other question I get is, “What about Jesus? Didn’t he say that he was the ‘only way’ to get to ‘heaven’?”
When the words are put into Jesus’ mouth, “I am the way,” what did they mean to those who first heard them? What is Jesus the “way” to? Though the teachings of Jesus were about inclusion, this teaching has been turned into a tool for exclusion. There is something wrong with your religion if it makes you unkind, intolerant, racist or selfish. Jesus taught about a love that is so powerful that nothing can separate us from it. Jesus sought and seeks to set people free from bondage. We have to walk beyond the certainty of religion in order to enter the insecurity of expanding faith in a frightening world.
